Ed's Chesprocott Region Blog: A Not So Simple Rib Fest in Wolcott CT

A Not So Simple Rib Fest in Wolcott CT

A little back yard competition over 10 years ago has evolved into an event. Thirteen teams armed with seasoning, pork, ribs, chicken and imagination competed for ribbons and bragging rights that will last for through the next year.

wolcott CT Rib festThere is no publicity, yet for the 10th year crowds knew to find their way to Peterson Park in Wolcott CT on the 3rd Saturday of September and wander up the tents picking at the offerings of the  contestants.

Pork and chicken was being deep fried, marinated in secret sauces, smoked, grilled then cut up into pieces for all to eat.

While the sampling was being offered, the main dishes were being  prepared to be formally presented to the judges.

Specially seasoned chicken being cut for presentation and placed out for tasting by attendees.

Through the day this was a repetitive scene.

While walking down the rows, you could be offered, pulled pork, pork laced macaroni and cheese; deep fried chicken tenders; deep fried Oreos; boneless ribs; corn chowder, deep fried corn on the cob and it kept going.

The proceeds from this event were being donated to needy families in Wolcott CT, in exchange for permitted the use of the field.

It was a full afternoon and needless to say, there was little desire for dinner at the end of the day.

What a great annual event and now that you have my mouth watering, I think I'll grab some friends and go visit our local rib joint in Naples!  Thanks for sharing!

What a great event -- good food mixed with a good cause, Ed. And I can see why no one was hungry for dinner afterwards!

Now that it is 3:00 and I haven't had lunch as yet, I'm really hungry. Sounds like an amazing event.

Make it a great week!

So, ED....I'm not a meat eater, but the fact that this money goes to needy families is great AND I just love the story you wove about the event itself!

That's pretty cool. How fun that it started so simply! Clearly it's become an area favorite. So what's YOUR fave? O rare you an unbiased visitor?

What a fun way to taste all kinds of tasty treats. This is an example of locals stepping up and doing something for those that are less fortunate.
