There is a connection between a mother and her children that defies definition. It reaches past the sense of logic and no matter how many times a harsh remark from a developing child may cut, it is a bond that knows no limit and is almost impossible to destroy.
If times are tight, a mother will go without so that her children will. I once heard a line that went, the Children never knew the chicken had bones until mother died. Kids will break their hearts and cause many a tear, but they will not darken that light that shines in her eyes when she looks at them.
A Mother will feel every pain her children have as if it was inflicted on her as well. A Mother will try to ease the burdens even though an obstinate child will insist that it needs to be done their way, even if blatantly wrong.
I will never forget a phrase my mother once used on me when I tried to remind her that I was old enough to make my own decisions: "Just wait until you are a mother and then you will understand, she said to me. I just shrugged my shoulders and walked away thinking she had lost it.
Many years later, I may just have realized the strength of those words, and can appreciate that love when I see Mom today. I know I have said some things in anger or frustration that would have cut deeply and yet as if never said, a short while later it's as if I had just looked at her and told her how much I appreciated her. I know I see it in my wife's eyes when she looks at her daughter and the grandsons.
It's Mother's Day, May 6, 2016. We will have a lunch with a few mothers today, but Mother Laura, at 93 will be the connection that brought all together.
Happy Mother's Day 2016
