Dissention In the Family Ground-Hog Day Predictions 2017

Feb 2 is traditionally called Groundhog Day, which is when that that chubby rodent is awakened too early so that he can come out of its burrow to predict the possibility of winter's end.

Regardless of what the weather forecasters might think with all of their scientific gadgets and data, we still look to Nature for the possibility of an early spring.

This year, the family of groundhogs are inconsistent in their predictions. In Gobbler's Nob PA, Punxsutawney Phil, probably annoyed at being rousted from bed so early, and after almost biting one of the assembled dignitaries, predicted another 6 weeks of winter. It could be a Central USA conspiracy as Buckeye Chuck in Marion Ohio also saw his shadow.

Meanwhile, back here in Connecticut, where we have Chuckles our own groundhog prognosticator, who resides at the Lutz Children's museum in Manchester, CT calling for an early spring. It makes sense as we have a very overcast day in our state so it would be very difficult to see a shadow.

So who is one to believe?

Common sense would suggest that always trust the ones closest to you which would mean we will not have that dreaded 6 extra weeks of winter. Of course in years past, when the shortened forecast was given, we got enough snow in that shortened period to wish it had been drawn out over a longer time.

Of course it's no secret that the flow in Connecticut is never the same as the rest of the country so could Chuckles just be trying to be different as well? Only time will tell and when March does come in will there be votes of impeachment for Chuckles?

I am not listening to Phil this year Ed Silva , I do like Chuckles and my own local ground hog did not see his shadow either. where he is calling for a March 1 spring

Good morning Ed,

As we seem to always get the last big flurry around the Ide's of March or St. Patrick's Day my prediction is eight more weeks if March goes out like a Lion!

Make yourself an astonishing day.

Good morning Ed. I was always miffed by this tradition and wonder what the poor groundhogs are thinking.

Good morning Ed.  Maybe it will be an early spring in CT and a longer winter in PA?

I predict another 6 weeks of winter here in Colorado.  We had a taste of spring last week with temps in the 60's but there is snow on the ground today and only 28 degrees outside.  Brrr

Ed I am going with Chuckles.  I am ready to put away the snowblower and shovels even though we have not had much of the white stuff this year.

Ed, I heard it yesterday on NPR - Phil is right only 49% of the time.  Or wait a minute - was he wrong 49% of the time?  Whichever way it goes, the odds that he nailed it are not great.  Stay warm up there!

Love it I asked the same thing yesterday.  In Georgia we are expecting an early Spring as well.

Nature knows best Ed! If 6 more weeks is needed before Spring, then so be it. I have been golfing all winter anyway!

Ed, I'm not even sure if we've had winter yet. I few very cold days sprinkled between mild spring like days.

I saw some funny posts on Facebook today - something along the lines of "the palm tree's shadow indicates 6 more weeks of warm weather!"

Ed Silva  I always thought that Punxsutawney  Phil was the original and the others are copies .That is my opinion and I am sticking to it .. I agree with many other comments winter really didn't hit here yet

Good morning, Ed... I'd still like someone to tell me why we listen to anything a groundhog has to say!

OK, someone has to say it. Groundhogs cannot predict weather!

I will go with Chuckles and his prediction. I think if Clarksville had its own groundhog it would have been in sync with Chuckles. Plus I love the name.

Poor Chuckles getting out of his comfort zone too early.

It will be interesting to see... Look forward to the follow up blog in March ;)

Grounds Hog Day! My grandfathers birthday so always a special day. We dont take much value in the shadow test up here either but it is still a fun way to celebrate Feb 2 every year!

Posted by Debra Leisek ( Bay Realty,Inc Homer Alaska) almost 2 years ago

I really don't pay much mind to the ground hog predictions. I take it day by day. Of course, I would love to see warmer weather, and I'm willing to wait for it to get here!
